To achieve deterministic IO behavior on the OCP JBOF (Just Bunch Of Flash) platform, ie Lightning, is sometimes challenging as the flash workloads at Facebook are in general sensitive to IO latency, especially read IO latency outliers.   Controlling the IO latency gets even harder as the single SSD capacity grows and sharing the SSD among multiple applications is inevitable.    This talk explores ways to improve the IO latency leveraging the recently standardized NVMe Sets and IO Determinism specifications.     We will present our Linux-based software architecture, various concepts to use Sets and IOD to realize better latency, and the tradeoffs therein.  We hope this effort will enlighten the audience with new ideas to achieve better IO characteristic and broaden the adoption of OCP JBOF to applications that were previously prohibited by their demanding IO latency requirements.
